Nanoblading vs. Microblading — What’s Actually Different, and Which One Is Right for You?

If you’ve been researching eyebrow PMU in Seoul, you’ve probably come across both microblading and nanoblading — and wondered what the difference actually is. They sound similar, look similar in photos, and both promise natural hair-stroke brows. So which one should you choose?

At Aya Seoul in Gangnam, we offer both microblading and nanoblading, and the honest answer is: the right choice depends on your skin type, your natural brow condition, and the kind of finish you’re after.

What Is Microblading?

Microblading uses a fine manual blade to create small, hair-like incisions in the skin, depositing pigment as it goes. The strokes are drawn one by one, following the natural direction of your existing brow hairs to create a realistic, dimensional look.

The result is a soft, natural brow that mimics the appearance of real hair. It’s been one of the most popular eyebrow PMU techniques globally for years — and when done well, microblading looks incredibly lifelike.

That said, microblading works best on normal to dry skin types. On oily or combination skin, the strokes can blur or fade faster over time, as the skin tends to break down the pigment more quickly.

What Is Nanoblading?

Nanoblading (also called nano brows) uses a digital machine fitted with a single, ultra-fine needle — much thinner than the blade used in microblading. This needle deposits pigment in precise, hair-like strokes with a level of control and consistency that’s difficult to achieve manually.

Because the needle is so fine and the depth is more precisely controlled, nanoblading tends to be gentler on the skin, more precise in stroke definition, and slightly more versatile across skin types — including some combination skin types.

The results look very similar to microblading — soft, natural, realistic hair strokes — but many clients find the healed result sits a little more crisply and retains color with slightly more consistency over time.

So Which One Is Actually Right for You?

Here’s a simple way to think about it:

Dry to normal skin → Both microblading and nanoblading work beautifully

Combination to slightly oily skin → Nanoblading is often the more reliable choice

• Very oily skin → Neither hair-stroke technique may retain well; microshading or combo brows may be a better fit

Want the finest, most hair-like strokes → Nanoblading often has the edge

Prefer a classic, proven technique → Microblading has a long track record of beautiful results

At Aya Seoul, we never decide on a technique before your consultation. We assess your skin type, your natural brow density, your facial structure, and your desired finish — and then recommend the approach that will serve you best long-term.

Because the goal isn’t to do the trendiest technique. It’s to give you brows that look right for your face, and that last.
